Canva or Photoshop for album covers: choose by the edit

Choose Canva for a straightforward layout you can rebuild with editable elements; choose Photoshop when the job depends on detailed layers, masks or retouching. The deciding factor is the source file and the change you need to make. An app cannot restore layers that were flattened into a JPG.

Start with the file you actually have

List the requested edits before opening an editor: replace the title, change a colour, remove an object, or create a vertical adaptation. Then inspect the download. A flat image, a layered PSD and a template link are different starting points, even when the previews look identical.

Check font availability, linked assets and which elements remain editable. Do not assume a cover includes a PSD or a Canva template; use the individual product’s file list. Try a copy of the source so the untouched original stays available.

When a Canva workflow makes sense

Canva is a practical choice when the composition can be built from an image background plus separate text and graphic elements. For example, a clean artwork with no embedded title can become a square announcement and a vertical story without needing detailed retouching.

Test import compatibility before committing to the workflow. Canva documents supported uploads, but accepting a file does not mean every effect or layer will behave exactly as in the original editor. Review the imported composition and the exported result, not only the preview.

When Photoshop is the more direct route

Use a layered Photoshop workflow when changes depend on selections, masks, blending or local image corrections. A title passing behind a subject, for example, needs control of the overlap rather than another text box placed on top.

Adobe’s layer-mask tools let you hide and reveal parts of a layer. Preserve those editable decisions in the master file. Name the key groups clearly, keep replacement text separate and check that collaborators have the required fonts before handoff.

Use a small edit test to decide

Try the hardest required change first. If it takes repeated workarounds, reconsider the tool or ask for a better source. It is more useful to discover that limitation before laying out every campaign asset.

For either workflow, export one final-size file and reopen it. Check text, colour, crop and the distributor’s requirements. If you need both editors, keep one approved master and make clear which exports are adaptations.

  • Text on a clean background: test a simple Canva layout.
  • Precise subject masking or retouching: use a compatible layered editor.
  • Flattened text or missing assets: obtain a suitable source or request an edit.
  • Several collaborators: agree on a master file, fonts and approval owner.

Questions & answers

Can I edit a song title in a JPG?

A JPG does not retain editable text layers. You may need the clean artwork or original source. Placing new text over the old title is only workable if the underlying image can be restored cleanly.

Does using Photoshop automatically make a cover better?

No. The brief, composition and final checks determine the quality. Choose the tool that supports the required edit and that you or your designer can use reliably.
